Saying 'Soccer' in Costa Rica
'futbol' vs. 'fútbol'
In Costa Rica, the word for soccer is 'futbol'. Notice that the tonic syllable is the last one, forming 'una palabra aguda'
with the accent over the 'o'.
Other parts of the Spanish-speaking world say 'fútbol' with the accent over the penultimate syllable,
forming a 'palabra llana'. Even though Ticos will almost always say 'futbol', some literate Ticos will write it
as 'fútbol', because it's often the only form that they ever see written. Just look up the word in the dictionary and you'll see
what I mean.
