How to Say 'Peach' in Costa Rica

melocoton v. durazno

While I was studying Spanish I was aware that there were two words for 'peach', 'melocotón' and 'durazno'. When I was living in South America I only heard 'durazno' for the delicious fruit and was even made fun of for using the incomprehensible word 'melocotón'. When I moved to Costa Rica, all I would hear was 'melocotón'.

Besides figuring out that 'durazno' is largely a South American word, I learned that Costa Ricans do occasionally use the word 'durazno', but to describe a different fruit. There is a small (and relatively uncommon) green fruit that Ticos call 'durazno'.

The moral of the story: Use 'melocotón' for 'peach' in Costa Rica and make sure that you know what they're referring to when they say 'durazno'. Otherwise, you'll go blind. (Your grandmother didn't tell you that was the only way you could do it)
