Sólido

Adventures in Rural Costa Rican Spanish

In rural areas Costa Ricans often take standard Spanish words and use them in non-standard ways. A prime example is the word 'sólido'. This word, meaning 'solid' in English, is often used as solitary or desolate. An isolated plot of land in the middle of nowhere could be called 'sólido'. This confusion comes from the similarities that 'sólido' shares with 'solo', meaning 'alone'.
