Rural Tourism: See the Real Costa Rica

Rural Tourism-a group of piglets at feeding time As rural people in Costa Rica are organizing themselves to diversify their local economies, rural tourism is picking up steam. A beach or a volcano will always attract the attention of the masses, but for many people who want to see the realities of real Costa Ricans, rural tourism offers a unique opportunity. Santa Fe de Guatuso, by virtue of having a fun, hard-working women's group, as well as the beautiful Santa Fe Wetlands, can be the most memorable stop during your trip to Costa Rica.

The Santa Fe Women's Group can happily and easily organize a number of fun and educational activities for visitors. Why is it so easy, you ask? Because these activities are a part of ongoing projects and fun cultural activities that the Women's Group enjoys with or without tourism. In other words, what you get in Santa Fe is a taste of real Costa Ricans doing what they do best. The various activities in Santa Fe include the following:

Rural Tourism-Rio Celeste Waterfall

  • Rodeo Festivals—see a rodeo with both female and male participation of all ages
  • Wetlands Boat Tour—take a boat ride along the Rio Frio (Cold River) and through the Santa Fe Wetlands to see a variety of birds, reptiles, monkeys, as well as gorgeous wetlands landscapes
  • Rio Celeste Hike and Swim—hike through lush forest in the Tenorio Volcano National Park to reach the beautiful Rio Celeste Waterfall
  • Horseback Riding—explore the gorgeous countryside along a number of scenic routes around Santa Fe
  • Biogas Instruction and Biodigester Construction—learn about biogas and get hands-on experience in building a biodigester
  • Reforestation—participate in the Santa Fe Women's Group's ongoing reforestation project
  • Women's Soccer—watch the better half of Costa Ricans play the national sport
  • Christmas Party—witness the spirit of giving with the Santa Fe Women's Group
  • International Women's Day—celebrate women on March 8th and learn about different women's issues with the Santa Fe Women's Group
  • Cow Milking Instruction—experience local women's daily routine of milking cows by hand
  • Prepare Organic Fertilizers—learn how to make organic fertilizers just like the Santa Fe women did
